Smartphone Free Childhood
St Mary's supports the work of Smartphone Free Childhood (SFC)
When children first started getting smartphones a decade ago, there was no research about their impact. Now there is, and it’s overwhelming. Exposing children to things their brains aren’t yet developed enough to deal with can cause a whole host of problems, from triggering anxiety and eating disorders, to opening the door to cyberbullying or sexual predators, according to the latest research.
When we give our children access to the whole world in their pocket, we give the whole world access to our children.
Smartphone Free Childhood (SFC) is a grassroots movement of parents on a mission to:
- Bring parents together to start new and positive conversations about the problems of smartphones in childhood.
- Engage in the national conversation about the harms of smartphones for young people.
-
Empower parents and schools to take collective action and create change in their local communities - signing a Parent Pact agreeing to delay giving their children smartphones until at least 16.
-
Strength in numbers – that could be the unofficial tagline for the Parent Pact. Because if your child knows a bunch of others in their class will also be getting a simple brick phone the peer pressure problem goes away. It’s that simple.
Together we're powerful.
As of October 18, 2024, 68,323 children and 9,168 schools nationwide are taking part in this grassroots movement. You can see the latest results here: https://parentpactresults.smartphonefreechildhood.co.uk/
